WSCC have made a decision to reduce gritting to major roads only to save money this winter this leaves significant areas at risk of accidents and isolation in ice and snow. It will result in difficulty for emergency services reaching villages taking longer to reach incidents and putting life at risk. Public services such as nurses, doctors, carers, buses, mail, deliveries, and service vehicles may take longer or not reach their destination at all if the road is closed by an accident or ice.
They say that the decision has been made on a risk based process however this has not been published nor local views sought through Parish Councils. This is not how these decisions should be made or announced at the start of the winter period. This decision should have been consulted upon in the spring when the public would had more time to respond.
This decision seems to have been taken without any consultation and is a fait accompli. There is an argument that there is so much traffic on main routes that they are at less risk of icing than B roads such as through Coolham, Brooks Green, Barns Green, Christ Hospital, Maplehurst and Nuthurst. Many of these roads have dangerous bends and steep hills that will be at risk of accidents and closure. These cuts are unacceptable and need to be delayed pending proper consultation.
