We are petitioning The Board of Education of West Salem School District to stop using municipal data to determine the weekly learning mode. We are asking you to develop an internal metric/dashboard using real time data to assess our staff and student risk.

We are petitioning a change to West Salem’s current online mode of learning for all students. We request you return all students to in-person 5-day school week.

Reasons:

1. Our population/municipality is so small. We need a form of measurement that can accurately show numbers within our school buildings. The current data shows presence of the virus in our schools is extremely low. Monitoring internal data in each building allows for real time risk assessment and decisions.

2. There is up to date evidence showing on a national level that the spread in schools can be controlled with proper protocols and guidelines. There is also evidence that younger children have a low risk of transmitting the virus.

3.  Surrounding towns and private schools have devised plans for their students and staff to return to school that provides in-person instruction 5 days a week.

4. The current mode of online education is impracticable for parents, caregivers and teachers.

5.  The mental health effects during a pandemic and online learning are important to monitor, especially in children. Children are not immune to the consequences of online learning.

6.  La Crosse County Schools have provided a virtual option, CRVA, for families who choose not to send their children to in-person school. Those who send their children to school are willing to assume the risks.

7. The current hybrid schedule alternating in-person and virtual learning was created to address the physical limitations of contact tracing and social distancing in the classroom. It is now clear that the current model has become a struggle for teachers and students.
