For a climate friendly West of England spatial and transport plan
This petition had 174 supporters
This petition is to ask the relevant authorities to make the West of England spatial and transport plan climate-friendly and meet our carbon-reduction targets.
The West of England partnership is producing a spatial plan to build over one-hundred thousand homes in the next 20 years. It is also producing a transport plan for the same period.
As things stand, each new home will add to the regional carbon footprint. We are not saying do not build the homes, but we do need to see a plan to make them carbon-neutral, even carbon-positive.
By their own figures, the transport plan will cut the number of commuter journeys by car from 343,800 in 2016 to just 600 fewer in 2036. We need to see a far greater investment in public transport and cycling and walking.
The country is committed to 80% cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Bristol is committed to being carbon neutral by the same date. To achieve this, we need to be over half way there by 2036.
The plans - as they stand - therefore - are hopelessly inadequate. The petition asks the West of England partnership and the combined authority to address this urgently.
