A H started this petition to West Lothian Council and

Bathgate Galaday is a time for celebration and coming together as a community. The official name of the event is Bathgate Procession and John Newlands festival.

Many do not know that Newlands was a slave and plantation owner. As we see the horrendous effects of racism taking place in the United States, it falls to us to do our part in dismantling racist structures and institutions. The festival of a slave owner is something I believe should not be celebrated yearly in such positive terms, and therefore I call upon West Lothian Council and the Bathgate Galaday Committee to change the name and focus of this event.

This does not erase our history or the part Bathgate and much of Scotland played in the Slave Trade, but sends a message that we do not celebrate those who perpetrated racist actions at any point in history. It is for us to do better and be better so that our children might grow up in a better world than we found it. I believe this is the right place to start.
