It is not acceptable in this day and age to have selective amnesia about our history. We can read & learn from the history of John Newland in Bathgate, but we can no longer glorify & celebrate a man who made a fortune through the enslavement of other human beings.

We need to raise our awareness of & take responsibility for past injustices and how that feeds into the present injustice and inequality suffered by people of colour. Our voices count.

We can't undo what was done, nor should we forget it, but we certainly shouldn't celebrate it. I also think WLC should run education courses on our local connections to slavery, and how they relate to modern day racism. A lot of ignorance has been exposed by this debate.

Because there is no reason whatsoever to commemorate or eternalise the names of our shameful racist past.

I was unaware that John Newlands was a slave owner until recently. I'm mortified to have ever celebrated anything with his name attached to it. The name needs to go and go fast!

We have to learn from the past and recognise and acknowledge the abhorrence of slavery and our role in it.
