Hello guys, I am the manager of a well-known football club for adults with a learning disability and I am pleading to those with the power and persuasion to provide us with the much needed facilities that we ask for as our players are forced to answer the call of nature under cover of the trees.
My name is Carl Eaton and I run the Skem Men-Aces, in Skelmersdale. The club’s lack of toilets and changing room facilities is a source of great embarrassment to me and certainly shows a distinct inadequacy as far as the discretion and basic human needs of those most vulnerable in our society.
During the winter the club trains at West Lancashire College, and we then move to Glenburn playing fields after spring. We can’t stay indoors all year around. One we can’t afford it and secondly we want to be outside during the summer.”
It really is a major cause for concern to me as all of our players have learning difficulties and are very vulnerable people. I have grown men going to the toilet under trees, with nowhere to get changed. When visiting teams come to play us, I am embarrassed and find myself apologising over the lack of amenities. When we have played Teams from St Helens, Bolton and areas throughout the North West, I have been amazed by the facilities on offer.
Despite our humble set up, our football team was a huge success at the Special Olympics in 2013 and the club brought a silver medal back to Skelmersdale after competing in a five-day tournament in Bath.
I myself am a wheelchair user through Spina Bifida and Right leg amputee and have received a lot of praise over the years, but now I need some help. We are not asking for the world.
We need our own pitch which we would maintain to a high standard ourselves and planning permission to build a small hut where we can get changed with a toilet. We just want a bit of dignity. Surely there is someone out there who can help us. Although the club uses West Lancs College during the winter, we pay between £40 and £50 per week to do so and through the kindness of the college this is at a significantly reduced rate.
Earlier this month our club revealed that one of their players had been chosen to represent Team GB in the European Mencap Tournament.Five players from the squad were chosen to take part in trials for the 15 Man Mencap GB Squad. The boys drove down in freezing cold temperatures and then took part in training sessions, under the watchful eye of European coaches, before playing a few matches.
Martin Makin has now been selected to play for Team GB in Geneva and will take part in several training weekends, where he will get to know his fellow GB teammates and play with them, before they all fly out to Geneva on May 21
Just a reminder to all you people that have the power to support our much needed campaign. I have no intentions of excepting that nothing or nobody carries not a crumble of care for our request. Sometimes I do feel like giving up on what I ask for but then I am reminded of the amount of people that I support and that rely on me. If this request means that i personally have to beg then so be it. If it means I have to shame you then let it be.
I swear that I will eventually get for what I request and for those of you that CAN make this dream into a reality, you will be forever remembered, you will put these Sportsmen/Athletes amongst one of Skems finest achievements and above all give them the acceptance, acknowledgment and recognition they deserve.
Please forgive my persistence, I'm not blessed with huge amounts of intelligence but I will move mountains for this club.
