Why this petition matters

Jeff Haaga, a member of the West Jordan City Council, was recently issued a citation from the South Jordan police for leaving the scene of an accident. Haaga had backed into a parked car, causing about $1,500 in damage. But rather than dealing with the damage, he headed home instead.

Oh, and by the way, Haaga was drunk at the time he was backing up the car.

While at lunch, Haaga had a little too much to drink. Being described as “very intoxicated,” he had his keys taken away and was driven home by someone else at the bar. Rather than waiting to sober up, Haaga walked back to the bar to get his car, at which point he drunkenly backed into the car and then fled the scene. When police later confronted him, rather than arresting him for driving under the influence, they simply cited him for leaving the scene of an accident—a citation Haaga said he wouldn’t have to respond to because of his position as a government official.

It was wrong of Haaga to claim that he was protected from responding to his illegal actions because he is a government official. No one is above the law, especially those who hold government positions.

But even more wrong was that Haaga flouted the law by recklessly driving while intoxicated and then leaving the scene of an accident. As a city council member, he took an oath of office to obey the Constitution and laws of the State of Utah. He willfully and deliberately broke that oath. By doing so, Haaga has shattered the trust of those who elected him to represent them. He should now be held accountable for his actions.

Sign this petition to demand that Jeff Haaga immediately resign from his position on the West Jordan City Council.
