As part of the West End Corridor Re-design, the City of Ithaca Board of Public Works (BPW) and the leading agency on the project, came up with the proposal to “road diet” the already congested W RT 79 Bridge. The proposal would remove one east bound car lane so that two bicycle lanes could be created. This was done without adequate public notice or process transparency, analysis of the need and return on investment, and environmental impact review e.g. traffic impact studies.
The BPW prioritized the wishes of a few bicyclists (estimated as a small fraction of one percent of all bridge users) over the needs of all other stakeholders that depend on car transportation for their most essential needs on daily basis. Similar measures have not been proposed in other more affluent communities despite them having a robust infrastructure to support their needs.
