Julia D started this petition to West Hartford BOE

On November 20, 2018, the West Hartford Board of Education (BOE) will be voting on whether or not to change school start times (update: the vote was postponed until April or May of 2019, so please sign and share if you want to help us encourage the West Hartford Board of Education to vote yes to delay school start times) The reason behind this possible change is that studies show that teenagers don't produce melatonin until around 11pm because hormones are getting in the way, so they can't fall asleep as early as they used to. But high school currently starts at 7:30am, so most students have to get up around 6am to get ready and make it to the bus. This means they are getting far less sleep then they should be. This lack of sleep may cause poor performance in academics and in athletics as well. It can also cause anxiety and other mental health issues. The average high school student is losing at least 4 extra hours of sleep per week. The proposal for the new start times is that elementary school will begin at 8:40, middle school will start at 7:45, and high school will be able to start 45 minutes later, at 8:15. Although it isn't ideal that middle school students have to be at school 15 minutes earlier, it means four years of extra sleep and better performance in school and in athletics. I personally believe that giving up a few extra minutes now will be worth it for high school. Those are the four years of our education that matter the most in West Hartford, and we need to be well rested and prepared for them. If you agree with me and believe that we should change the school start times, please sign below.
