E. Fay started this petition to West Hartford Board of Ed and Town Council

The Board of Education is set to vote on a school start times proposal on 11/20/18. The change in start times would impact every citizen in West Hartford. It will:

  • Increase the school budget with regards to transportation costs (confirmed by Superintendent Moore at the 11/7/18 meeting- costs are projected to be $100,000, but could be more an unknown);
  • Increase late afternoon traffic in town as later school dismissals compress the window for after school activities, student driver or parent pick-up, and teacher commutes (this has happened in other communities that have implemented these changes);
  • Send middle school children to school earlier, negatively impacting their sleep patterns and leaving them home alone for a longer period of time in the afternoon;
  • Increase the amount of time kids in elementary school spend in before and after care programs, which would increase costs for parents;
  • Negatively impact after school activities for high schoolers (field space is limited, after school jobs can be impacted and swim teams will likely see an impact).

All of these negative side effects would result from an effort to give high school students a little more sleep, but not enough for a meaningful impact.

The Board of Ed should not be able to make this decision single-handedly. It should be a referendum for the citizens of West Hartford to vote on. Please sign this petition to have our voices heard and allow a town wide referendum on the issue. Thank you!!
