Rowan Topolski started this petition to West Hall High School and

We, the students at Hall County schools, demand a change. Our current dress code is vague, biased, and sexist. We believe it targets feminine presenting, people of color, and “heavier” people.

Our Solutions:

  • Remove the hole/slits above the knee rule
  • Remove that shirts have to cover the entire shoulders (Bra straps being visible should not be a violation of the dress code.)
  • Remove banning of blouses
  • Remove the banning of leggings having to be covered by appropriate clothing. (Leggings are not sexual, they work as pants and should be treated as such.)
  • Remove the banning of sundresses.
  • Alter that the stomach should not be shown, there is a limit, but nothing about the stomach is sexual. (The limit would be if the underside of the bra/breasts were visible.)
  • Alter mini-skirts/dresses/shorts. (It is hard to judge what is too short, anything showing the buttocks or inner thigh is our limit.)
  • Alter bandanas. (This is more focused on racial bias, we wish this would be applicable to every race. Ensure there is no targeting.)

Additional arguments/information:

We, the students at Hall County schools, demand a change. Our current dress code is vague, biased, and sexist. We believe it targets feminine presenting, people of color, and “heavier” people.

Out of the following dress code rules available on the Hall County Website we demand the following should either be removed completely or altered, “Mini skirts or mini dresses sundresses, blouses, dresses or shirts that expose the stomach, sides or back; all shirts must reach the waist and cover the shoulder, leggings without an appropriate shirt, skirt, short, and/or dress coverage, bandanas, and clothes with holes or slits.”

These demands are outrageous and too open-ended. The vague and unfair rules specifically target, women as most of the rules are directed at typical feminine attire. It is simply unnecessary to sexualize young girls, deeming parts of the body such as the shoulders and stomach as “distracting.” It varies from teacher to teacher to decide what child is breaking the dress code and causing such distractions. Thus, allowing teachers' biases to show through, leading a disproportionate amount of people of color to get dress coded for wearing something like bandanas. Finally, clothing fits everyone differently, so it is unfair to judge what skirts, rips in pants, dresses, and shirts are deemed inappropriate for a skinnier person to a heavier person.

To solve these problems we have many different ideas. We would like to completely remove the rules claiming to completely cover the shoulders, holes/slits above the knee, blouses, and the legging rule. They are frankly unnecessary. Next, we would like the remainder to be altered, the stomach should be allowed to be shown. So clothing such as crop tops or tank tops should be allowed, however, the underside of the bra/breasts should not be visible. Next, we want the limit to deciding how short a dress, skirt, or pair of shorts should be no buttocks or inner thigh to be visible. Anything else is acceptable. Lastly, no bandanas should remain a rule, but, racial biases of teachers need to be addressed.
