Businesses and residents throughout the West End fully support busking. We love the diversity of the entertainment and the vibe it gives the area, pleasing tourists, local residents and businesses alike. However, there are some buskers who come here and don’t appreciate we all have to work together. Which is why we support Westminster Council’s plan to introduce a simple licensing scheme for whoever wants to perform on our streets. Some buskers ignore the fact that - in Leicester Square in particular - local businesses pay for the cleaning and private policing, making it safe and pleasant for everyone there. Some buskers decide they’ll ignore common sense and politeness and play music way too loud, using amplification, so office workers can’t concentrate, local restaurants can’t sit people outside and residents have a miserable time. Some large groups of buskers, often dance troops, cordon off large areas which block the thoroughfare, so people can’t pass, creating bottlenecks and large crowds. These audiences are great for pick pockets. And some buskers ignore the law and play after 9pm, which is the agreed cut off time. So, the majority of local businesses believe a few small rules about where and when buskers can play, and how loud, is surely not too much to ask. And introduce some fairness for everyone.
