In West Contra Costa Unified School District’s initial “Covid-19 Student and Family Safety handbook”, it was stated that, “Classrooms, bathrooms, and common areas will be cleaned and sanitized frequently, and all our procedures comply with the CDC cleaning guidance” (Page 11, Par. 1). Over the past three weeks, at least Pinole Valley High School has not been cleaned thoroughly or sanitized, even though these actions are supposed to be taken “frequently”. It is visible that a number of areas are not clean at all, leaving students, teachers, and families with the question, “Why haven’t more custodians been hired to take on the additional amount of cleaning needed to keep everyone safe from Covid-19?” Our school district cannot possibly expect for the “pre-covid” amount of custodians to do such an extensive job on such a big building “frequently”, meaning they need to provide each school with the funds to hire enough custodial staff, as well as to assign a designated day towards sanitizing the campus at least once a week.

On the WCCUSD Covid-19 Case Dashboard, only two positive Covid-19 cases are listed under Pinole Valley High School. Speaking with other students and teachers, who will remain anonymous, I have been provided with the information that there are indeed more Covid cases than the “2” listed above. These case numbers come from the weekly tests conducted at each school, yet the issue with this is that not even a fifth of the school is tested, thus making it an untrustworthy number. Outdated statistics are not helpful in keeping everyone informed, making it absolutely necessary to update this dashboard frequently, as well as ensure that each parent, student, and guardian has the information to access these numbers. No matter where a student or staff member tests positive, whether it be at Kaiser or at the school, the district needs to alert every student, parent, guardian, or family member that could have been exposed. A big part of keeping everyone safe is being responsible, notifying all at-risk parties, and keeping school campuses clean.
