West Aurora Student Participation in the March 14th National School Walkout

West Aurora students recently tried to have a walkout along with East Aurora, Oswego East, Geneva, Batavia, and St. Charles; however, the students were told that if they participated, there would be consequences. On March 14th there is a national school walkout for 17 minutes: one minute for each of the people lost in the recent Florida school shooting.
We understand that it can be disruptive to the school day and education, but 17 minutes is almost nothing to miss considering that those 17 victims have 0 minutes left. This walkout empowers and connects student nationwide, and could benefit and strengthen West Aurora as a community.
In order to comply with West Aurora High School and School District 129 and ensure our safety during the walkout (which was a district concern previously), we would like permission to participate in this walkout at on March 14th, 2018. A supervised walkout would ensure that no one left campus, while also allowing students to share and voice their opinions in the manner of a public forum.
