Demand Wendy's Purchase Produce within the Fair Food Program
Why this petition matters
The Fair Food Program was an initiative started in an effort to end wage theft and violence against farmworkers in the agriculture industry, with a focus on tomato farms in Florida. It works like this: buyers (like McDonalds and Walmart) agree to pay 1 to 4 cents more per pound of tomatoes. The growers, in turn, agree to pay their farmworkers at least the local minimum wage and meet basic requirements for their health and wellbeing -- like providing shade/water and having policies in place against physical and sexual abuse. It is essential that as many companies as possible agree to buy within the Fair Food Program to incentivize farms all over the country to operate within Fair Food standards. Unfortunately, Wendy's has chosen to NOT participate in the Fair Food Program and continues to purchase tomatoes from farms that exploit and endanger their workers. Wendy's may be saving a few cents per pound of tomatoes, but the cost they are incurring is much greater: a few cents at the expense of human well-being and dignity. Wendy's famous square-shaped burger patty is a symbolic commitment to never "cut corners", so it's time the chain stopped cutting corners when it comes to decency.
