We the undersigned agree with the following statement and call upon Kirsty Williams, the Education Minister to reverse the Welsh Government’s decision to re-open schools on 29th June:

No going back to unsafe schools and workplaces.

The NEU and UCAC teacher’s unions say that returning to schools on 29th June for all pupils is too much, too soon. We agree. We also agree that the NEU’s 5 tests, that include regular testing of children and staff combined with extensive contact tracing, should be met before re-opening schools.

Infection rates are still rising in some areas of Wales such as Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil, so it is far too early to make projected assumptions that rates of infection will fall significantly by the end of June. In fact, SAGE scientists have not suggested that it would be safe to return to schools in Wales yet.

Sending children back to school too soon risks a second wave of the virus which would prove devastating for workers and their communities. The rush to open schools prematurely is based more on economic concerns than the educational wellbeing of children, and will threaten the safety of teachers, support workers, children and their communities.

We strongly oppose an early return to schools. We support action that unions may take to prevent this potentially disastrous decision. We also support a boycott of schools by parents and children.
