Equal rights for all Welsh Tenants - Grace period for all.

We are starting this petition in order to try and protect the rights of Local Authority and social tenants across Wales. You may or may not be aware that over the past 2-3 years a small number of councils have suspended the Right to Buy for a period of 5 years in order to protect the housing stock, or so they say. By suspending the Right to Buy this has effectively prevented 100’s of tenants from purchasing their homes that they have worked hard to make into a home that they can be proud of. The suspension was only meant to be a temporary measure; however the Welsh Assembly Government (Welsh Labour) now want to abolish the Right to Buy scheme across the nation bringing to an end a scheme that has benefited 140,000 families in Wales since its introduction. It is highly likely that they will get their wish and the Abolition of the Right to Buy will go ahead meaning any tenant in Wales that lives in Local Authority or social housing will no longer be able to purchase their home in the future. The Welsh Government have stated that there will be a 12 month grace period once the law has received Royal assent for tenants to purchase their home before the Abolition of Right to Buy takes affect. Unfortunately this 12 month grace period will only be offered to tenants that are currently living in an area that is not currently under suspension. So that means that certain tenants in Wales will be allowed to purchase their homes while other tenants will be denied the same rights purely based on which area of Wales they live in. So people living in Carmarthen, Swansea, Cardiff, Flintshire,  Anglesey and Powys will never again be given the option to purchase the place they call home. This leaves these tenants with minimal options, they can continue to pay rent to a social landlord knowing that the house they live in will never be their own or they can buy a house from the private sector. The tenants who would like to become a home owner will effectively be forced from the place that they have made their homes or continue to pay dead money in rent.

I don’t believe that we can prevent the Abolition of the Right to Buy but we can fight to make sure that ALL tenants in Wales whether currently under suspension or not will be given the right to purchase their home.
