Dedicated Lacrosse Complex Fields in Wellington

Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the United States and in Florida at the youth and collegiate level for boys and girls. We estimate our village has well over 500 male and female players at the youth recreation, travel, junior varsity and varsity level as well as hundreds of former players, future players and family members. Currently there are no dedicated lacrosse fields anywhere in our Village. Children need a safe area to play and practice lacrosse. The Village of Wellington allocates tax payer dollars annually toward maintaining dedicated space of:
-22 baseball/softball fields, 14 batting cages with lighting, restrooms and concessions.
-9 soccer fields with lighting, restrooms and concessions.
-3 Football fields with lighting, restrooms and concessions.
-2 hockey rinks with concessions and restrooms.
-6 beach volleyball courts with lighting and restrooms.
-3 indoor basketball courts and a new gymnasium being constructed.
-24 tennis courts in the newly constructed tennis complex
-1 large fenced skate park with restrooms nearby
-multiple recreation outdoor basketball courts with lighting and restrooms.
This petition seeks to establish the future Greenbriar multi-purpose fields (Tree lot next to Dog Park) as "dedicated fields exclusively for lacrosse" assuming 3-4 full length fields with adequate parking is provided. It is our understanding that 4 fields are budgeted ($4 million) with additional parking and slated as multi-purpose. Based on this information we believe this space which was originally suggested at a June meeting with Jim Barnes and Mayor Anne Gerwig is potentially the ideal site. We targeted 9 sites and highly recommended this site due to the available space as well as the already existing dog park, restrooms, safe playground area and parking.
