Elia Levy started this petition to Wellington City Council

Wellington CBD's nightlife has the highest proportional rate of assault nationwide. Within a five year period, 2056 counts of assault and 176 counts of sexual assault were reported, occurring most frequently around Cuba street and Courtenay Place between the hours of 12am-3am.

It is important to note that Wellington does not have anywhere near the highest rate of general crime. This is telling of an incredibly dangerous drinking and nightlife culture. Despite this, Wellington does not have any Local Alcohol Policies regarding security at venues where alcohol is being served. This means all alcohol related policy falls under The Sale and Supply of Alcohol
Act 2012, which has no binding rules about providing security for guests, and rather focuses on "preventing intoxication." This is a huge oversight. I have personally experienced and witnessed assaults that could have been avoided if the venues had provided adequate security.

Events and establishments holding a liquor license should be required to practice safety measures in the interest of their attendees. Leaving it up to good faith that drinking establishments will protect their customers is clearly not working.

I am proposing the Wellington City Council instates a Local Alcohol Policy that makes it legally binding to provide a minimum level of security at events and venues that pose a high risk of attendee intoxication. Please sign this petition to let the Wellington City Council know that you support them in working on a Local Alcohol Policy to help reduce nightlife related assault and sexual assault in the CBD.
