Create a paved pedestrian access to the recreational canal from the towpath village area.

The population of Welland’s north end is continually growing and it would be extremely beneficial to have a safe pedestrian access to the recreational canal and the canal parkway trails (which span the Niagara Region) for all to enjoy. A paved walkway in the Lancaster Drive/St. Lawrence Drive area will help promote physical activity and allow residents of all ages to enjoy the area more thoroughly.
The rough terrain separating neighborhoods in Welland’s northeast end from the rec canal - known as the ‘northern reach’ - can only typically be traversed by mountain bike. This difficult hike leaves young families with strollers and those who prefer to walk or use alternative forms of mobility without access to the recreational canal.
This pathway would also encourage more foot and cycle traffic towards the downtown area, being a safe and direct route for those residing in the North end. Conversely, an access in this location would give residents from other areas of Welland an alternative, more scenic route to the Seaway Mall and the fairgrounds.
Ward 4 councillor Pat Chiocchio will be speaking to Welland City Council regarding this matter and a petition would help tremendously in showing the interest of residents to have access to the recreational canal become a reality.
