The UK approach to helping Ukrainian refugees is an acute source of national shame. We are facing the worst refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War, and the Home Office response has been inadequate to the point of immorality. These are desperate human beings, typically women and children, and the elderly, looking for safety in this country. The Home Office has been taking a narrow-minded, 'computer says No' approach, and made statements about 'surges' in processing staff that they must either know not to be true or cannot possibly be certain are true. They don't even seem to know where the visa application facility for refugees reaching Calais is! The Government could apparently waive security concerns when it came to awarding a peerage to a Russian businessman, but are making UK relatives travel to Calais, and further afield, to help their family members. We should have welcoming reception centres in this country, and give refugees a reasonable period of time to sort out their paperwork. After all, the Economic Crime Bill gives the foreign owners of UK companies - potentially being used to hide illicit wealth - 6 months to declare and verify their identities. And the Government should immediately expand the categories of those eligible to come here, to include at least extended family and those with friends and other connections to the UK.
