Linda Kanoski started this petition to Weesaw Township Board

The Weesaw Township Board has received bids from logging companies to remove mature trees from the newly acquired 28 acres of land surrounding the Morley/Ballengee Marsh.  Many of these trees are over 100 years old, are still in healthy condition, and represent the uppermost canopy of an old trail that formerly led to the cemetery.

The Weesaw Township community has expressed concern over the potential removal of these trees at a public meeting on August 29, 2020.  A group of residents has since formed with the purpose of: Assisting the Weesaw Township government in preserving, maintaining and improving the parkland, in a way that makes it accessible for all to enjoy, and by doing so, raises awareness within the community of the value of nature, so that the old growth forest is left in its natural state for future generations to experience.

To this end, we, the undersigned members of the Weesaw Township Community, respectfully request the Township Board:

(a)    Engage an accredited Forest Management Consultant to create a Forest Management Plan, who is paid for their services directly and not by commission from a logging or lumber company, followed by a period of public review and comment on the plan before adoption by the Board.

(b)    Allow community input on a proposed site plan for the cemetery expansion.

(c)    Continue to allocate funds for improvements to the trail system throughout the property, with the goal of creating a trail that circles the marsh.
