Diana Davis Hartley started this petition to Webster Town Board

Webster's Greenspace is rapidly disappearing because of zoning laws which do little to protect it, and because of the land acquisition policy the town board has adopted which is unable to be competitive with developers seeking to purchase land from private owners.

Until now, we as a community have been complicit in the destruction of our forests and fields. By not objecting to the policies developers and those profiting from development have been advancing, we have been allowing profit to shape what Webster has become.

The message we've been sending to our town board is that we're ok with the policy of having land zoned for profit rather than for protection of nature, and that we are not going to hold the Town accountable for it's failure to develop another open space acquisition plan in order to compete with developers and secure the ownership or development rights of open space.

Especially with the town elections coming up in November, it's time to send another message. Here it is.

1. We want an amendment to the zoning laws in the town code which allows for a conservation area classification, and we want the town to pursue rezoning of areas which would be optimal for preservation.

2. We want the town to create another open space acquisition plan, and seek out another bond when the current one expires in 2025 (or pursue alternative sources of funding) in order to secure the purchase and protection of this open space.

3. We want the town to pursue these ends as a matter of urgency.
