Dress code is a highly debated topic in schools. For our school particularly, Granville Central High School, our dress code is notably geared towards girls.

I believe that a dress code that is actively enforced is necessary, but not to the level of extreme that has been shown thus far. The goal of this petition is not to abolish dress code as a whole, but only to dilute its sexist standards.

By invoking a dress code that outlaws Nike shorts (or shorts of a similar style), dresses well beyond finger tip length, or even jean shorts that cover all areas of concern, is telling girls and women to dress in order to make men more comfortable. These rules, in the authority's eyes, are to teach women modesty, or to keep girls from being objectified. The motives do not stand alone, though. These rules teach women to conform to society and be uncomfortable in their own bodies, creating self conscious behavior and thinking within young women. What women wear should not decide whether or not they will be sexualized because it is our choice, and our right to express ourselves in the way that we please without an uneasy feeling.

It's understood that there is a time and place to wear certain attire, but some of the particular items of clothing that are popular in today's youth should not be discriminated against. Rather than teaching women "modesty", people should teach boys and men self control. Women shouldn't be confined to keep them from the sexual eyes and minds of men. Women deserve more.
