Why this petition matters

Citizens of Williamsburg, Iowa:

We are asking for your support of a local and family-owned business of 55 years.  On March 28, 2022, the Williamsburg City Council passed a resolution to award S & J Sanitation a 5 year contract to manage solid waste and recycling for the city. A majority of the city council members ( 3 of 5) voted for us and we were set to start on August 1.  We've hired an additional driver, ordered carts and additional trucks.

Today, we were notified that the mayor intends to veto the resolution in favor of leaving the contract with the second largest garbage hauler in the U.S. based out of AZ (Republic). The mayor's argument is that the we cost an average of $2.20 more per month than Republic and that it would be disruptive to change companies.  This was covered in the meeting and they lost.  The only new twist is that he says he isn't confident we can get the job done. We've been doing it for 55 years for far more customers, we can do the job! Cox is about the same size and they did the job for years.

The only way to override the mayor's veto is for four of the five city council members to vote for us.  We only had three of the five voting for us in the city council meeting when the resolution was passed and we're hoping you can help us convince at least one of the other two to vote for us.

We hire local. We pay local property taxes in IA County. We've been around for 55 years and are hoping to survive the big corporate expansions.  We believe in supporting local business and we hope you do too.  Williamsburg residents:  Please sign the petition and include your Williamsburg address.  Others in Iowa County, please write the mayor or city council. Thank you!
