Signage to highlight HGV traffic coming in & out of Maltby Colliery on A631 Tickhill Rd

On 7th March 2018, my husband James Sullivan was killed on his motorcycle when a Hargreaves lorry had pulled into his path when exiting the Maltby Colliery Site exit on the A631 Tickhill Road, Rotherham.

He was 31. We had been married for just 6 months.

James was not speeding.

At the time of James' death, this road was a 60mph road and has since been reduced to 50mph. Some of the trees have been cut back but not significantly enough!

There is only ONE sign indicating that the entrance is there. There are absolutely NO signs to indicate that there are LARGE vehicles entering and exiting the entrance. When these vehicles pull into or out of the site entrance, they take up both lanes to make any manoeuvers and the position of the site entrance on the road means there is also reduced visibility.

All we ask is that the Council and Hargreaves Land and all other land owners put something more effective in place that makes motorists aware of these large vehicles and that there is a works entrance, and not just signpost it as a 'junction' as it is currently. We also feel a further reduction in the speed limit would benefit, not just motorists but also the drivers having to pull heavy laden vehicles out of this site.

This road is notorious locally for the number of accidents and fatalities that happen along the whole stretch of road. There have been 2 accidents at the site of the Colliery entrance, both have been fatal.

We don't want another family to go through what we are going through right now.
