We want peer mentoring services at St. Mary's College of California!

Hundreds of students at St. Mary's College experience difficulty socially. I know I struggle a lot with making friends and talking to people without making stupid mistakes because I am nervous. Our school is supposed to be inclusive, but a lot of students do not feel accepted by their peers. Sometimes going to CAPS is not enough. Students with social challenges often need support from their socially skilled outgoing peers to help them practice interacting with people in a more casual setting. Other catholic institutions such as Mercyhurst University in Erie have peer mentor programs that have been very successful in helping students build confidence and get to know people. There have got to be lots of students at SMC with broad social networks who are willing to help their less outgoing peers. Here is what I am thinking: you would sign up for the program and fill out a survey stating your preferences for the peer mentor you want. You would meet with your mentor individually 4 hours per month plus additional social get-togethers with each other's friends or at school events. Peer mentors would be paid just like any other student leaders. I can provide additional information and references once this petition gets enough signatures.
