MORE SECURITY NEEDED FOR SCHOOLS IN DISTRICT 202
0 have signed. Let’s get to 200!
Our district has A.L.I.C.E in place for the safety of our school. As much as this training is praised, I find it absolutely flawed, I do expect it to be flawed, if it weren't, we wouldn't be here trying to figure out what more can be done.
The issues I have with only using ALICE are certain things that haven't been thought through, and even after speaking with the police I did not get the answers I was seeking.
I was told that during a lock down situation, they place the back of the chair that props against the door under the handle to ensure you cannot push it open. Granted I have seen this and it does work. Problem number one. If this is grade school, are the chairs high enough? sturdy enough? because with a smaller chair and enough force, it can be broken.
Problem number two: There are windows on or next to all of the classroom doors. The first thing after realizing the gunman cannot penetrate the door, he will then knock out that window which will give him full access from left to right to shoot at anyone, you cannot hide behind desks and chairs and expect to live. When I asked the officer about this flaw, I was told that a teacher can attack the perpetrator with a a bat to disarm him. Again, this logic is flawed and I am still awaiting that protocol. do all teachers have bats? during a lock down, are they ready next to that window? what if they haven't gotten there yet, are they willing to approach flying bullets spraying across the room to try to disarm him?.
Again, I am not against A.L.I.C.E but I am having issues with it being the only force used against a mass murder situation as this father agrees in the article here:
This is what the president states:
While ALICE advocates may be well-intentioned, “the trainers and people pushing the program often come largely from outside of K-12 school settings and fail to factor in age and developmental issues, special needs children, autistic, emotional and behavioral disorders, physically-challenged, and other unique considerations of school and child-centered settings.”
I think we need the entrance to be secure, meaning you do not get to walk to the office, you should walk into a room that is adjacent to the office, this room you take your coat off, you cannot arm yourself with a giant gun under your shirt. You would then give the office past their bullet proof glass your ID and have it put into the system as they do now. You are then buzzed through a metal detector like the high schools have in some towns and allowed in as a parent or guest. That ensures who is coming in the front. This idea is not expensive.
Other doors are already locked and a break in through a window would cause attention, The windows next to or on the classroom doors need to be changed to bullet proof glass like the front door office idea. The schools and police claim they are open to new ideas but were negative to the responses of what other schools have in place. If you have a good Idea please email me, the Plainfield police department or Jennifer Orlos who is the director of Dept. of Admin and Personnel.

Some insight into what other schools across the U.S are doing besides just ALICE:
IN OKLAHOMA THEY ARE BUILDING BULLETPROOF SHELTERS IN THE CLASSROOM.
THESE SCHOOLS HAVE ARMED GUARDS, DOES YOURS?
HERE IS WHAT INDIANA IS DOING:
I would love to put in place new door blocking systems such as the Barracuda, which works on doors that swing in or out. As of now the police are working with the fire dept. as this seems to be a fire code restriction which I am not in understanding of since the device simply slips on and off of the door top and does not stay on. That idea is still be tossed around and you can see the video here:
FOR DOORS THAT SWING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION HERE IS THAT COMPANY AND THAT IS SOLVED:
HERE ARE ALL OF THE LINKS TO SEE FOR YOURSELF WHAT OTHER SCHOOLS ARE DOING BUT NOT YOURS.
PLEASE STAND BY ME TO ENSURE OUR CHILDREN ARE SAFE, EMAIL YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND THE PEOPLE IN THIS LETTER TO DEMAND MORE CHANGE FOR OUR SCHOOLS. THE ALICE PROGRAM IS NOT GOING TO BE ENOUGH AND OUR CHILDREN AND TEACHERS ARE SCARED. FOR THOSE THAT HAVE SIGNED MY PETITION, I THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
