Saving Ocean Life

Saving Ocean Life
The world’s oceans are a diverse and abundant ecosystem that humans need in order to survive. The oceans cover over 72 percent of the planet’s surface, provide over 97 percent of the world’s water supply and over 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe. We have so much to thank the oceans for, however, they are threatened daily by natural and manmade pollution. Ocean pollution comes in many forms, but the largest factor affecting our oceans is plastic. Over the last decade, we have produced more plastic than we have in the last 100 years. This increase in plastic entering our waters harms not only marine life but also humanity. Plastic kills fish, birds, marine mammals and sea turtles, destroys habitats and even affects animals’ mating rituals, which can have devastating consequences and can wipe out entire species. Destroying our oceans only hurts our own species and will have lasting effects in the years to come. If people want to save our oceans then there are a few things they can do on a daily basis to try and cut down the amount of pollution entering our oceans. One possible solution to this problem is reducing waste. This means that people can cut down on the amount of trash being thrown away and making sure to recycle materials when possible. Another method is reducing pollutants. This meaning that people choose non toxic chemicals and making sure to dispose of all chemicals properly so they do not end up in our oceans. This can also include using fuel efficient vehicles, or carpool or ride a bike when possible to cut down on the amount of pollution being put off in the air. The final method is shopping wisely. This would include choosing sustainable seafood items when eating and buying less plastic and instead using reusable bags. If people begin to use these small methods through out their daily lives it will begin to make a huge difference at our effort of trying to save our oceans.
