We support Parent Coordinators in New York City Schools

Parents, from all five boroughs, have come to rely on their school-based Parent Coordinator. Parent Coordinators are the only employee of the school solely dedicated to assisting parents with their concerns. We are focused on keeping parents well informed, creating a welcoming school environment for all families, regularly outreaching to parents to engage in their children’s education, disseminating the myriad of DOE initiatives to parents and creating involvement with community based organizations within our schools, which in turn means parent empowerment!

Letter to
Anthony Weiner
I am one of 1400 Parent Coordinators working for the NYC Department of Education. It has been brought to our attention that one of the candidates in the NYC mayoral race has proposed that the position of Parent Coordinator be eliminated from the Department of Education (DOE) as one of his ways to fix the New York City’s budget.

We are truly Community Associates as diverse as our New York City schools, many of us providing translations to families from countless cultural backgrounds on a daily basis.

Parent Coordinators also advise and assist parents in their roles and responsibilities as Parent Teacher Association (PTA) leaders and members in addition to assisting Parent Advisory Committees (PAC), Chancellors Parent Advisory Committee (CPAC) who meet with the Chancellor on a quarterly basis and the School Leadership Team (SLT) parent members.

It will create mass confusion amongst millions of parents who will be left without the one individual who has been trained extensively for the last ten years to help them navigate the complexity of the New York City public school system. With the push of the new Common Core State Standards parents need all the help they can get to prepare their children for college and careers. Teachers, Assistant Principals and Principals all have an increasing workload and cannot possibly dedicate the time necessary to properly assist families in a timely manner.

It is our belief that the elimination of our vital position would not only distress our own lives, this proposal will place a financial burden on the entire City’s economy as 1400 jobless men and women take to the unemployment lines. Now is not the time for job cuts in our city.

Instead of eliminating our positions, making them permanent at this time will show that as mayor, this candidate cares about the children and families of New York City.

In closing we feel compelled to mention that other elected officials over the years have recognized and honored Parent Coordinators by hosting special events. We have been presented with certificates, plaques and Legislative Resolutions. We are hardworking parents and grandparents who have a common love and dedication to our communities and children. We are asking for the community’s help in saving our vital jobs. If you have a child in the NYC public school system or have had the opportunity to be in contact with a Parent Coordinator we are asking that you sign this pledge. Your signature below represents your agreement that Parent Coordinators are valuable and need not be eliminated.
