Because I believe it the right of all New Zealanders (at least ethical right) of all citizens to have access full access to public and commercial buildings, otherwise it is a form of discrimination .... and that is just KIWI !

All people should be able to access public buildings whether born with disability or acquired through accident or age. End discrimination. It is basic right

I am a disabled man and have been for twenty-five years. We live in a disabling world because one size does not fit all. It is not only people with physical disabilities that are affected its all people who are different e.g small people, children and the elderly. We need to learn that all disabled or different people are people just like the milieu. Disabled persons are marginalised more by a disabling mentality which proffers 'that because you are different in some way, our society will need to accommodate and that accommodation often means inconvenience. The earthquake in Christchurch was terrible however it does offer Aotearoa a great opportunity to build a fully accessible city that will be an example for the rest of the world. It will require city planners, architects et al to construct with a non disabling attitude in the forefront of the cerebral membrane.

It's new build, why not take the opportunity to cater for all people and not just the privileged few who have full functionality in their body and senses.

People with disabilities have the same right as everyone else to have adequate safe access to all public buildings.

Years ago as a student nurse I spent a day in a wheelchair as part of my training, and it was one of the most valuable experiences of my entire life. Even simple things like crossing the road, and purchasing groceries in a supermarket suddenly took on ridiculously gigantic proportions in terms of ease of accomplishment.

Because the Government should not need to be "urged" - "to make accessibility a best practice goal – not simply a minimum compliance issue" - for best practice management should define such competence a prerequisite!
