Hi, my name is Eliana and I’m 11 and coral reefs are DYING OUT! We need to protect them starting NOW! Corals build the reef structure and provide the basis for functioning coral reef ecosystem. Without corals, reefs will degrade and vanish within years. At present, coral reefs are facing multiple stresses such as pollution, overfishing, and, overall, the ongoing climate change crisis-consequently raising sea water temperatures and causing coral bleaching worldwide. As a result, over 50 percent of the world’s coral reefs have died in the last 30 years and up to 90 percent may die within the next century-very few pristine coral reefs still exist. A world without corals means not only will we have a less diverse and less beautiful ocean, but it will also be an economic disaster for many people-predominantly in developing countries. Fisheries and tourism provide important livelihoods that directly depend on healthy coral reefs. Reefs are nurseries for many fish species, including commercial ones, and attract millions of tourists every year. Coral reefs offer natural coastal protection, especially in areas frequently impacted by hurricanes and tropical storms. The great biodiversity of coral reefs serves as an important source for new medicinal remedies. Overall we need to save the corals now! But if we want to do that name brands like Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic, and Copper tone have to contribute to by creating safe sunscreens and banning ones that contain harmful ingredients  like oxybenzone and butylparaben that disrupts coral reproduction, causes coral bleaching, and damages coral DNA. Also, those certain sunscreens not only destroy coral reefs, but they destroy our skin too, example: ingredients like avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene are very harmful to our skin.

So if we want to save the coral reefs we must do the following:

  • The FDA (food and drug administration) needs to ban all products that contain ingredients that are toxic to coral reefs
  • Name brands like coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, and Banana boat need to start creating safe and healthy sunscreens and ban all there old, toxic sunscreens
  • The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) must ban coral bleaching and the toxic ingredients that go into everyday sunscreens
