We need High School Diplomas for Special Ed. Students in South Carolina
This petition made change with 275 supporters!
Currently in the state of South Carolina students enrolled in the Special Education Program will not receive a high school diploma upon graduation. After 13 years(k-12) of attending school and doing the work to the best of THEIR ability they will only receive a certificate of completion.
The students can walk at graduation, but the issue is that businesses require a high school diploma for employment. They do not recognize a certificate. Therefore these students are having difficulty finding jobs and being included as members of our society after high school.
I can tell you as a parent of a special needs student these kids work just as hard to earn their grades. They show up to school everyday. They do the work that is within their ability, and they should be able to earn a high school diploma right along with their peers.
Please help us support the Berkeley County School Districts efforts to have this changed so that all students will earn a high school diploma.
This petition is being sent to SC Senator Tim Scott as well as the Director of Special Education Services Dr. John Payne who will pass it along to be included in the proposal to the State Oversite Committee to propose a change to one high school diploma with multiple pathways to achieve it. If it passes it will then go to legislation for a vote.
Please speak up and support our Special Education Students. They deserve it and they need it.
