We Demand Secretary of State and Gubernatorial Candidate Brian Kemp Resign Immediately!

The state of Georgia is approaching perhaps its most critical election yet. The governor’s race between former House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and current Secretary of State Brian Kemp has been labeled as one of the key races to watch in the 2018 midterm elections. As Election Day draws closer, the Secretary of State’s office is responsible for registering voters, keeping voting machines secure, and ensuring free and fair elections across Georgia-- yet the media reports that Brian Kemp has been shamelessly using his position as Secretary of State in order to promote his own campaign.

It is ethically wrong for a politician to oversee the campaign he is a candidate in. That’s why we’re calling on Brian Kemp’s to resign as Secretary of State immediately.

For decades, Georgia Secretaries of State from both parties have resigned while running for higher office, in order to assure voters that as a candidate, they will not exploit any unfair advantage and keep elections nonpartisan. In 1996, Georgia Secretary of State Max Cleland, a Democrat, resigned from office to run for U.S. Senate (GA SOS Official Page). In 2009, Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, a Republican, resigned from office to run for governor. When Handel resigned, she said,

“I did not want any perceived conflicts of interest concerning my overseeing the primary or general elections, investigating complaints that arise, and certifying the results of the elections while a candidate for Governor and serving as Secretary of State,”(Georgia Public Broadcasting, 2009).

Georgia voters deserve a Secretary of State who will put fair and free elections first-- not his own political gain. It’s time for Brian Kemp to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors from both sides of the aisle and resign as Secretary of State.
