I watched a video this morning and have been on edge... trying to find the words to describe mentally, where I am. It is not only infuriating but left me exhausted from seeing yet another Black man be stereotyped, belittled, assaulted, and disrespected. This video hits close to home because it’s a classmate from Hampton University. An HBCU where we’ve found our pride. Where we’ve learned, we come from royalty, where we’ve earned our degrees only to leave and experience microaggressions, racism, injustices, and inequalities. Jaaye is an attorney. This means he has a Juris Doctor degree. This means he put in the time, effort, and dedication to protect, fight for, and represent men and women who could be wronged by the law. Yet, because he was dressed in plain clothes, he was treated similar to those he spends his time representing. What this video says is that it doesn’t matter that he has his degrees and is educated and successful. It matters that he is Black. They see color before they see titles and accomplishments. I hope you watch this video and be moved to sign this petition and write a letter to this judge and DA to dismiss charges toward Attorney Person-Lynn. The punishment is unjustifiable.
