Dequan Johnson started this petition to District Attorney of Tarrant County Sharen Wilson and

It has been brought to my attention that the trial for the former police officer that murdered Atatiana Jefferson is being put off until the very end of summer next year (the end of August 2021). It has also been brought to my attention that a motion has been filed to move the jury to a different county.

This is unacceptable for a couple of reasons. For one this time frame means those of us who have been waiting for justice for Atatiana Jefferson will have to wait almost another year ( almost two years after she was murdered) to see any type of justice served in this case. More importantly, her family will had been made to wait almost two years to receive the closure they need. And almost two years for her nephew and other loved ones to see some type of actual confirmation that Atatiana's life matters to the powers that be in this country and that something will be done about it. No one wants to live the nightmare of having to wait that long to see if something will be done about the murder of their aunt, sister, daughter, friend or anyone who is near and dear to them. The timeline is unacceptable.

The excuse for this timeline is undoubtedly related to the COVID19 pandemic. HOWEVER, bars, clubs, grocery stores and schools amongst other things are open right now. The capacity of people involved in all these things outweigh the capacity of people needed for a trial. This is especially true when you consider virtual options such as Zoom. There is no excuse why this trial should not be held sooner. The solution is simple: test everyone that is going to be present for the trial, have them quarantine 14 days prior, take their temperature as they enter the courtroom, social distance and wear face masks and you can have a trial.

The motion to move the jury to a different county is also unacceptable. This is a clear and despicable attempt to select a jury that is more likely to empathize with the former cop that killed Atatiana. It should not be people from another county who decide this case. It needs to be people from this county that decide this case. It needs to be people who have a reason to care about whether or not the police in Tarrant county are held accountable for their actions. It needs to be people who have a reason to be concerned about the public safety of people in Tarrant County. A jury from another county has NO reason to care about that. Especially if that jury is all white. The implicit bias that will undoubtedly come with a jury from another county is NOT acceptable.

So PLEASE sign this petition to demand an earlier trial date: no later than January. And to demand a fair trial: with a jury comprising of residents of Tarrant county including African Americans.
