Today, Russian citizens do not have access to a vast amount of information: independent media, social networks, instant messengers are being blocked. The tools through which Russians could communicate, learn about what is happening in the world, educate themselves, work are becoming inaccessible within Russia.
Most citizens are now actively developing their cyber awareness and learning how to use VPN services, hoping for not to be isolated from the world in the nearest future.
VPN is one of the most popular tools for accessing information and maintaining privacy on the Internet. Without it, Russian users would be deprived of both.
Unfortunately, free VPNs tend to be unreliable and don't provide enough privacy to keep users safe. After Russian payment platforms were disconnected from the international banking system (Visa, Mastercard, PayPal), it became impossible for Russians to pay for any international VPN services with Russian cards, so ordinary users who do not know how to use cryptocurrencies found themselves cut off from international services.
We at Roskomsvoboda, together with millions of Russian citizens, are calling on international companies who develop VPN services to provide Russian users with free access to their services in order to protect their basic rights to privacy and information. We believe that the observance of these rights will not only protect Russian users, but will also contribute to resolving the current crisis.
Access to information is a basic human right enshrined in various international agreements. In critical situations, it is more important than ever to ebserve this right.
