We are Maryland educators and public school employees, and we are concerned that our voices are not being heard. We believe that education is essential and we want the opportunity to return to our classrooms this year. Maryland is one of a handful of states with minimal students in classrooms, despite the fact that the state has some of the lowest COVID cases per 100k.  Schools all over the country with similar case rates are opening their classrooms safely, yet our students remain deprived of in-person instruction and are falling further behind.

As educators we understand grades.  The outcomes thus far have been alarming. When we see 36% of our low-income students fail English, or our most vulnerable students’ failure rate in math increase by 500%, we are dismayed and angry.  The effects of virtual schooling go beyond academics, and we know that while it works for some students, others are feeling increasingly isolated and bored.  They miss the structure of school and the energy they get from being in a classroom amongst their peers.

We want our students to be successful, and for that, we need to be with our students. Currently, Maryland teachers are working harder than we’ve ever worked before to adapt our lessons to an online platform.  However, our tireless efforts on screens are not enough to meet our students’ needs, particularly our most vulnerable populations. Let us instead have the opportunity to return to our students in-person to give them the education they need and they deserve.

Just like doctors, dentists, police, childcare providers, and grocery store clerks, teachers are essential. We want to be on the front lines with our students.  We are not afraid to return.  We’ve heard our nation’s leading public health experts, including Drs. Walensky, Fauci, Jha, Frieden, and Redfield, as well as leading researchers at Harvard, Tufts, MIT and Brown, that the latest data shows it is safe for schools to reopen and that transmission is lower in schools than the community.   We’ve seen our colleagues from numerous states and nearby nonpublic schools return to classrooms safely for months and we know with proper mitigation, such as masks, updated ventilation, and distancing, we can return too.

We believe in the plans Maryland counties have devised for us to return safely.  Our colleagues up and down the coast are safely utilizing the same safety mitigation measures that our counties have proposed and they are working.

So please continue to do everything in your power to get our Boards of Education to reopen schools. We are essential, and we are ready and eager to be in the classroom with our students. Our students need us.
