Sara Edson started this petition to Berkley MI School District Parents

Dear Members of the Board:

We are a group of like-minded parents in the Berkley School District who firmly believe that at this time, we can safely offer in-person instruction to our children, especially at the elementary level.

First, we would like to give a large “thank you” to the school board for its efforts in keeping our children and staff safe during this difficult period. The decision to close schools last March and switch to virtual learning when so much was unknown was prudent. However, now that the scientific and medical community tells us that there is very little COVID transmission in the schools, and neighboring districts are already safely transitioning to in-person instruction, it is time for Berkley to join them.

Secondly, we believe that the plans laid out by Superintendent Dennis McDavid for a hybrid return to school for elementary level students should be implemented. To this end, there has been much data collected highlighting the limited transmission among students and staff when masking, social distancing, and mitigation strategies are utilized.  To wit:

  • In the December 4, 2020 issue of Newsday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo discusses how thousands of tests were performed in schools and that without exception, the infection rate was lower in the schools than in the surrounding community. Even in areas where community spread was more than 5.3%, school infection rates were lower.
  • A recent Yale study examined 57,000 childcare workers during the first three months of the pandemic and found that those who continued to care for children in-person did not experience higher rates of COVID-19 infection than their counterparts who stayed home.
  • In the December Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published by the CDC, data analysis revealed that children and adolescents were more likely to test positive for COVID-19 after attending social functions such as a wedding or a funeral than after attending in-person school.

Finally, nearby districts—Troy, Birmingham, Farmington Hills, Novi, and Walled Lake, to cite a few—have resumed in-class instruction this month. Clearly, these districts believe it is not only safe, but in the best interests of the students, to resume in-person instruction in as timely a manner as possible.

Therefore, we urge you to consider our request for reopening as soon as possible.

Respectfully,

Dr. Julie Greenberg, DO

Dr. Erin Duchan, MD FAAP
