Keep the West County Mandarin School at the Serra Adult School Site

This petition had 122 supporters

The WCCUSD board members unanimously approved The West County Mandarin School at the Serra site on February 15, 2017. The site for the school was discussed in multiple public meetings with agendas posted online, including documents with Serra listed as a recommended site. Please keep your promise, and don't turn your backs on the kids. They are counting on us.

72 kids are waiting for their school to open, and they don't deserve to be punted around like this. Changing location plans now delays the start of setting up the school. The district already has plans to put in playgrounds and renovate the classrooms. Don't let the Serra protesters stop the school's progress.

50% of the West County Mandarin School are low-income families, English learners, and/or foster youth. The new school demonstrates the district's commitment to the region's most vulnerable -- high need youth. We strive for a diverse population to receive the cognitive and social benefits of a Mandarin immersion education so that it serves all of West County.

The already approved plan for the Serra site will make adult school education accessible to even more of our West County community. The school district plans to consolidate the Serra adult school with the Alvarado adult school campus. Serra is not easily accessible by public transportation and 80% of the adult school students need a car to attend classes. The Alvarado location is more easily accessed by bus and is only 3.3 miles from Serra for those that drive. Additionally, the school district plans to provide more classes at elementary schools and other under-utilized sites that are already located in the areas with the most need, allowing increased and easier access to adult school education.

-  The Mandarin school is utilizing a space that would otherwise have stood empty. The school district already had plans to consolidate the Serra adult school campus with the Alvarado campus. The West County Mandarin School is NOT displacing the adult school.

-Help unify our community over more and better educational opportunities for ALL. Sign this petition to keep the West County Mandarin School at the Serra site, as voted on and planned.
