Make WCC Courses Pass/Fail 2020
Why this petition matters
Due to the COVID 19 Virus, Washtenaw Community College students were forced to transition to online classes. However, this is not an easy task to navigate and succeed through. According to Marilyn Atkinson, the Founder and President of 40 years to the Erickson Coaching International institute, "Research conducted by Columbia University’s Community College Research Center has shown that students who enroll in online courses are far more likely to withdraw from, or fail, the course than students in traditional classroom-style courses? Attrition rates can be as high as 90% in online classes." This statistic is extremely enlightening toward today's times, and especially towards WCC Students. Online class sessions can't reciprocate the vibrant energy and learning environment created by in class sessions, and office hours is not the same as an in person basis. Furthermore, the curriculum is a lot more challenging to learn and is harder to retain when needed later in future assignments and exams. For all the reasons above, we humbly request that WCC adopts a fail or pass base system for the Winter 2020 semester in light of these strenuous times.
