Allow Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at WSU
This petition made change with 130 supporters!
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a rapidly expanding martial art based on self defense. BJJ, also known as the gentle way, teaches various aspects of grappling. The art promotes the concept that a smaller person can successfully defend against a larger opponent by using leverage and proper technique. BJJ also fosters overall well being with strength and cardio conditioning.
BJJ is a club sport at other major universities in Michigan, but there is no Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Wayne State. This year a BJJ club attempted to form and received over 250 signatures of interest. Approval for the club was denied based on logistic concerns from faculty. The concerns raised included insurance and facility space. There are however, many viable solutions to these issues that students are willing to work towards.
The ultimate goal of this petition is to have Wayne State University incorporate BJJ into either fitness classes, club sports, and/or educational classes. We urge you to sign this petition to promote equal representation of all students and to support the formation of a BJJ entity at WSU.
