PETITION OF CAPRI MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS WHO DISAGREE WITH THE CAPRI BOARD’S DECISION NOT TO SHOW THE “ATTICUS” DOCUMENTARY AND CALLING FOR CURRENT CAPRI BOARD MEMBERS TO RESIGN; AND NEW CAPRI BOARD ELECTIONS BY CAPRI MEMBERSHIP VOTE
The Capri Community Film Society bills itself, and has long functioned as, an “independent, community film society.” As such, it plays an important role in a parochial city. New residents and others not part of “Old Montgomery” society find a welcoming, progressive, and intellectual haven at the Capri. Movies are shown not otherwise available in a theatre setting in the State.
The Capri Board is self-perpetuating -- the unelected Board refused to show a film about the criminal prosecution of an Alabama governor, in the name of protecting a powerful fellow Board member from speech about people and events in the Montgomery community, wherein the public is especially qualified to judge for itself the validity and importance of the movie’s content.
Although the current Board members may have powerful and important connections leading to a successful theatre remodeling project, this does not mean they own the soul of the Capri Theatre or that the Capri Theatre’s important role in this community can be destroyed for the price of a “better theatre seat and cup-holder”. If the membership has better facilities, but lose our beloved Capri’s value to the membership and community, we have nothing that the “for-profit” theatres do not have. We can have both improved facilities and our unique role.
The current Capri Board’s resignation and a democratic election process are immediately necessary. If you agree, please sign our petition.
