As Howard University celebrates its 150 years of "excellence in truth and service," it is pertinent now more than ever that the University Administration establish its unwavering commitment to oppressed peoples, especially as a historically Black University in Donald Trump's America. In an effort to foster an inclusive and progressive institution, The Concerned Students, 1867 issued the following demands: https://twitter.com/huresist/status/830984000462274561
In 1867, Charles Boyton, Howard University's first president who shortly resigned over a dispute with namesake Otis O. Howard stemming from their differing racial policies, "advocated that Howard should become a university dedicated to the cultivation and celebration of the glories and contributions of the African race and the uplift and aspirations of their descendants in America." Otis O. Howard disagreed.
In 1968, Howard University students advocated that Howard University Administration and faculty cease to promote assimilation into "white America," and rather demanded University leaders be committed to the principles of Black self-reliance and self-determination. Students also demanded the University create a Black Studies department to expedite their stance.
In 1989, Howard University students fought to ensure that our University would not be infiltrated by those who oppose and hinder our urgent struggle for Black Liberation.
In 2016, #TakeBackHU rose to demand the University Administration simply live up to its mission and provide a safe place for all who attend.
In 2017, we humbly ask how we find ourselves here yet again?
Please support us in signing this petition and ensure that "our Black institutions don't end up in the hands of those who oppose us."
