"The WCBOE believes that: 'It's all about the children.'" - WCBOE website

If this is true, then why are the children (and faculty, as well as the families of said children and faculty) being subjected to forced direct contact with multiple confirmed variations of influenza, streptococcus, coronavirus, and other serious illnesses currently plaguing every school in the system? Across the river in Lawrence County, KY, they are on their second week of schools being closed due to the same situation, while Wayne County schools have many children on their second or third rounds of illness.

Why? Because of the extreme attendance policies of Wayne County (and across WV, in comparison to surrounding states) and the way attendance and pay are calculated. Parents know not to send sick children to school, but strict attendance policies are forcing those some parents to do just that, endangering other children and continuing to further infect the schools. Both are archaic rules rendered obsolete given the successes proven in places such as Lawrence County, KY. One may ask, "Why are you championing the policies in LC and across Kentucky?" Frankly, because they've been proven to work. For everyone involved. We need similar educational illness plans adopted and put into action here at home lest this situation continues to play out year after year after year.

The West Virginia State BOE needs to reevaluate and immediately implement new attendance standards and take into account a more modern and proven formula for attendance and faculty payment rates. Meanwhile, the Superintendent and Wayne County BOE needs to allow several successive days of school closure to thoroughly clean and disinfect the schools, allow those children who are sick and are nearing their absence allotments (at the halfway point of the year, mind you) to recover before being forced back into the schools, and spare those children who are not yet sick from suffering the same fate and continuing to spread these illnesses through other family members.

Stop the vicious illness cycle and demand they prove that it's truly "all about the children." If you're sick and tired of your entire families constantly being sick and tired, raise your voices and demand action now.
