Don't Make Later Start Times for Wayland Elementary Schools

A proposal is now being considered in Wayland, Mass., that will require all town schools to begin at a later time. While there is considerable research showing older students benefit from later start times, there is no such evidence that elementary school children also benefit. In addition, the families of these elementary school children would need to accommodate a 9 a.m. start time which comes at a significant expense to many working parents who would need to pay for before-school programs under this proposal. We are asking the following of the Wayland School Committee: Do not make the elementary school start times later — find another way to accommodate different start times for the middle and high schools.
