In recent years India has seen the unhappiness of farmers grow steadily, as evidenced by the rise of suicides and protests taking place all across India. Why are they mad? There are a myriad of reasons. Firstly, they are receiving inadequate recognization. 70% of the Indian population lives in rural areas and farmers make up the majority of landholders. Furthermore, India is the world's largest producer of cotton and the second-largest producer of rice, sugar, and wheat. Yet agriculture only makes up roughly 15% of the GDP. Additionally, the amount of land that farmers own has been going down in recent years and farmers are unable to bargain and set proper prices. Farmers are the backbone of India, but they are not receiving the recognization and care that they deserve. There are major issues with the supply chain and compensation. There is, however, a company that is transforming the food economy by revamping the supply chain and assisting farmers in receiving compensation and deciding which crops to grow, all using technology.

WayCool is an agritech startup founded by Karthik Jayaraman and Sanjay Dasari. WayCool uses machine learning and a modernized supply chain to aid farmers. By using machine learning WayCool can help farmers in deciding which crops to grow and where they should be sent to. By modernizing the outdated and inefficient supply chain that was used for far too long, food wastage can be reduced and fresh produce can remain fresh while coming to the markets sooner. As a first-generation Indian-American, I grew up hearing stories from my father when he was living on his farm in his village. I myself have been to India and I see the condition that many farmers and rural people live in. I also see the food that has gone bad, not because of farmers, but rather due to the inefficient supply chain that does not treat the food with the proper care and gets it to the markets late.

Agriculture is the backbone of India and the farmers who work tirelessly every day deserve proper treatment and recognization. That is why it is imperative that the Indian government must use technology to advise farmers on what to produce and when to produce. Also, ensure that the farmers are paid appropriately, and on time. To achieve that, they can encourage and partner with companies such as WayCool.
