Lengthen lunch periods for WCSD elementary students

My 1st grader comes home from school with a stomachache nearly every day and frequently ends up in the nurse's office in afternoons at school complaining of a stomachache. My 3rd grader frequently complains he didn't have time to eat his whole lunch and was hungry in the afternoon. I have spent time in the lunchroom at our elementary school and tried to eat the way our students are expected to eat and felt awful myself for the rest of the day. There is clear research (links to articles below) that having less than 20 minutes to eat, not 20 minutes for lunch period, but actually 20 minutes of eating time, is detrimental to a student's health and ability to learn. We are so focused in our schools on standards and meeting benchmarks that anything not considered instructional time gets shortened, which is actually counterproductive. If kids had more time to eat their lunch they would perform better in the classroom. In addition, we are contributing to a significant societal problem of food waste. Please sign this petition that we can present to the Waukee School Board to begin pushing for change in the way our kids eat lunch.
