Waterworks Road Pedestrian Safety Improvements

The issue

This petition is calling on the Hobart City Council to upgrade the footpaths and roadway along Waterworks Road to improve safety.

Waterworks Road is a busy, narrow and in parts steep residential street with sections of limited visibility. It is widely used by pedestrians and cyclists, particularly children attending local schools. The Hobart City Council has previously invested significant resources installing compliant footpaths, pedestrian crossings and slow points above the intersection with Romily St, however there has been no improvements to the lower street. We feel the current infrastructure along this section of street is inadequate and poses significant risk to users.

Residents along Waterworks Road have raised a range of concerns including;

  • Inadequate footpaths that do not comply with recommended widths and often end abruptly without crossing points
  • A lack of safe crossing points (examples include near the intersections with Lynton Avenue, Dynnyrne Road and Romilly Street)
  • Excessive vehicle speeds for the streetscape

A small group recently met with Hobart City Council traffic engineers who visited Waterworks Road to discuss these concerns in person. Potential improvements discussed included a providing a continuous footpath along the length of Waterworks with associated crossing points where required, crossing points around key intersections and options to manage vehicle speed.

Please sign this petition to demand the Hobart City Council take action to improve the footpaths and overall safety for users of Waterworks Road.
