Help Watertown Demand A Climate Emergency (Watertown Residents Only)

We are calling on our town council to declare a climate emergency, and we need your help. An “emergency” can be defined as many things. Some communities use the term for weather catastrophes, unforeseen dangers, or sudden threats. Declaring an emergency allows a town, state, or country to recognize and put their focus toward a major issue at hand. While a “climate emergency” isn’t necessarily a traditional municipal emergency, it would bring Watertown to address the urgent threats we’re facing right now.

Declaring a climate emergency would clearly and unequivocally establish that there is a crisis facing our community and that we need to act quickly to prevent it. If we do not address the climate emergency now, we will face hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, and other natural disasters that have already put millions of lives at risk. Climate change is a real and imminent threat, and a Climate Emergency Resolution will put it at the forefront of people’s minds--especially members of our Town Council.

The first step to solve a problem is to recognize it, and that’s exactly what a Climate Emergency Resolution would accomplish. If Watertown declared a climate emergency, it would emphasize the fact that climate change must be immediately addressed. It would demonstrate clearly that the Town of Watertown is committed to instating policy to ensure a livable future. It would also demonstrate to Watertown community members that climate change is a recognized issue, and that we must all work together to combat this crisis. We must remind our government, and ourselves, of how important it is that we address climate change right now, and a Climate Emergency Resolution would do exactly that. The Climate Emergency Resolution will be brought before the town council in the next upcoming weeks, and will be put to a vote. Join Sunrise Watertown, WE3C, Extinction Rebellion Watertown, and other Watertown Residents to show support for this resolution.
